Curatorial Rationale

The major theme that I wanted to present through my art is the exploration of becoming a modern day woman. I used my own personal experience along with other relationships that I've observed to build an understanding of the social restraint and objectification of women in pop culture. In order to do this I portrayed the common symptoms that indicate being a teenage girl in the 21st century.
My vision when arranging my artworks was to visualize the gradual addition of color which represents media portrayal of what a woman is supposed to do and how she is supposed to act. In order to do this, I placed my pieces from completely black at white at the top to fully color saturated at the bottom. It was important to me that the colorful works were at the bottom because they are more symbolic and seem cheerful. This is a progression from the top pieces which are more vulnerable and have more clear messages behind the subjects. This shift from exposed to masked purposes of the piece demonstrates the depth of a young woman finding her way in life. Pieces such as, "Craving" and "Desolation" are more confrontive than "Refinement" and "The Mold" which are more symbolic and less expressive.
I placed "Vanished"at the very top left to start with a complete black and white color palette. This is the first piece in the exhibition as it is most personal to me and most easily relatable as it depicts losing yourself to try to become someone you are not. The painting is very expressive as identity can be difficult to accept and the lack of color adds to the seriousness of the topic.
The prevalent connection between the top three pieces, "Vanished," "Desolation," and "Craving" is the depiction of difficult subject matters that aren't talked about enough. These pieces have the most negative space and are the most bare in the exhibit. "Craving" is on the very top in the right corner because it makes the most sense with the positing of the subject in the drawing. To further the depiction of loneliness and shame this piece was placed in a corner. It is also more visually appealing to have "Desolation" a drawing with muted colors between two pieces that are mainly black and white. "Desolation" highlights the cocoon setting which is another reason it is between two pieces. The subject is in between difficult battles in her head  just as she is in between two difficult mental and physical portrayals of sicknesses in the exhibition.
"Silenced" and "Fulfillment" were placed in the second row because they have an expanded color palette and deal with more commonly talked about issues in society. They are both very realistically drawn pieces that emphasize the reality of adulthood and the consequence of growing up. "Silenced" is a very dramatic and explicit piece in terms of the subject matter of physically being forcefully censored, it is grouped with "Fulfillment" to acknowledge that motherhood is not something that all women look forward to or have planned for their future as a child in most cases physically suppresses the aspects of a young and crazy life.
Placing "Refinement" and "Cycle" under those two works gradually shows how the pieces become more abstract and less realistic. In "Refinement" we see the constant portrait of a woman that was used in both "Vanished" and "Silenced" however this time she has color in her face. There is an element of nature in this row with the use of green as an accent color is both pieces. These pieces are used to embody the liberation of expression and movement.  Lastly, "The Mold" is at the very bottom because of its over saturation and seemingly stereotypical subject matter, a woman in the kitchen. However, this series of photos express the perfect recipe for fitting the mold is through creativity and embodiment of what you want.
I intend for people to come away and think twice about the way they treat or talk about young women. Furthermore, I want the subject matter of my exhibit, teenage girls, to no longer feel alone or abandoned by society but to talk more about the struggles they go through. I hope the viewers of my work find a duty to spread kindness in the world and feel like they can overcome the restraints that are imposed on them by modern society.
